Today, he’s announced a new band called Yesness, which comprises him and Kristian Dunn of post-rock duo El Ten Eleven. Their debut album See You At The Solipsist Convention arrives in November, and as a preview, we get to hear the lead single “Not So Sorry Now Are You?” today.

Susanna Hoffs has been steadily releasing new music in recent years, most recently the covers albums Bright Lights and The Deep End. Her music-biz novel This Bird Has Flown is also being adapted into a movie. For her next project, the Bangles singer has unearthed some recordings that sat unreleased for a quarter of a century.

Beach Bunny are easing into their post-Emotional Creature phase. The poppy and emotionally incisive Chicago rock band returned in June with “Vertigo,” their first new song in two years. Today they’ve got another new track, a thoughtful charmer called “Clueless.” Though it takes its name from a teen comedy, the song is about drifting away from your friends as you age into your late 20s. It conveys its sentiments with help from a video by Bertie Gilbert.

Nick Drake’s Pink Moon is an endlessly renewable resource — an album you can always go back to and expect to feel the same melancholic comforts, as well as one that tends to spawn some excellent covers. Today we get one of those courtesy of Portland genre jumper quickly, quickly. The artist born Graham Jonson has recorded a gorgeous rendition of Pink Moon closing track “From The Morning,” one that taps into the original’s organic spirit while adding quite a few modern production flourishes.

In just two days, Alan Sparhawk, longtime co-leader of the great American indie rock institution Low, will release his first-ever solo album White Roses, My God. Sparhawk recorded the album after the 2022 loss of Mimi Parker, his wife and bandmate. On the LP, Sparhawk finds unconventional means to access and convey that grief, making extensive use of electronics and vocal filters. That’s what he did on the early singles “Can U Hear” and “Get Still,” and it’s also what he does on the newly shared song “Heaven.”

I’ve been posting songs by the Jyväskylä, Finland screamo band Alas here for years, often in the context of split records with likeminded acts. Today they’ve got another one on deck. The new Alas EP is a split with moshimoshi, their peers from Helsinki. Whereas Alas specialize in high-flying, combustible post-hardcore epics, moshimoshi play mathy punk with snaking guitar parts, chaotic drumbeats, and gang vocals aplenty. It makes for an interesting match, and both groups bring the heat for all three of their tracks. Check out the split below.

Cartoon Darkness is about a month away, and Amyl And The Sniffers are being generous with the previews. The Melbourne rockers have already shared “U Should Not Be Doing That” and “Chewing Gum” (as well as the non-album track “Facts“), and today they’ve got another one for us. With its almost Morricone-like feel, “Big Dreams” is sparser and more melodic than your average Sniffers track for much of the runtime, but it maintains the band’s usual rough edges throughout and beefs up its sound at the end.

Earlier this year, the pranksterish London dance duo Two Shell released some big singles: “Talk To Me” featuring FKA twigs, “Round” featuring the Sugababes, “Gimmi It” featuring nobody. According to this Reddit thread, they also leaked their upcoming album a couple of months ago by leaving USB drives on the Boiler Room floor. Pretty funny! But now Two Shell have finally gotten around to properly announcing their new album, which is set to drop next month.

Piano man Ben Folds released the solo album What Matters Most last year, and now he’s announced plans to follow it with his first-ever Christmas LP. The Ben Folds holiday record comes out next month, and it’s called Sleigher. (It’s a pun. You get it.) The album is mostly original, but it’s got a few versions of standards.

Marquette power-pop Band To Watch Liquid Mike are known for their prolific output and for pairing gargantuan walls of guitar with even bigger hooks, all of which continues today. The band just released a pair of great new songs on the deluxe edition of this year’s Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot, and today they’re adding one more called “Crop Circles” ahead of their next run of tour dates.

Three years ago, Houston rap great Maxo Kream released the Tyler, The Creator collab “Big Persona.” Great song! Today, the two rappers are back together on “Cracc Era,” another Tyler-produced track. Once again, it’s a great song.

Mediocre will bless us with their new album Growth Eater this Friday. The anticipation is up to the brim following wonderful singles “Fun Time Fix (We Go Go)” and “Litterbug!,” and today they unveiled one last taste with the beautiful, grungy earworm “I Might Be Giant.”

Next month, Katie Gavin of MUNA will unveil her debut solo album What A Relief. So far the singer-songwriter has released “Aftertaste” and “Casual Drug Use,” and today she’s back with the twangy single “Inconsolable,” which she previously debuted live with the Japanese House in LA.

In June, Emile Mosseri released the thoughtful song “Wasting Your Love.” It turns out that track is from his just-announced new album Trying To Be Born, slated for release Feb. 21. The sprawling single “Don’t Fall Back So Easily” is out now.

Last month, Rosalía featured on “New Woman” by Blackpink’s LISA. Today, the beloved Spanish singer teamed up with Spanish producer and singer-songwriter Ralphie Choo for the new song “Omega.”

Earlier this year, Candy released their brutal yet zany third album It’s Inside You. Today, the Richmond hardcore favorites are announcing a new EP titled Flipping whose cover artwork is as eyebrow-raising as the music. The lead single “Football” is out now.

Primal Scream are gearing up for the release of their 12th album Come Ahead. So far the Scottish electronic rock stalwarts have previewed it with the singles “Love Insurrection” and “Deep Dark Waters,” and today they’re back with the dance-ready anthem “Ready To Go Home” and the liberated tune “The Centre Cannot Hold.”

Arty New Orleans post-punk duo the Convenience released their debut album Accelerator in 2021, and band members Nick Corson and Duncan Troast have worked with people like Rui Gabriel, Drugdealer, and Troast’s sister, Saturday Night Live cast member Chloe Troast. Today, the Convenience have a new two-song single.

The LA-based musician known as urika’s bedroom makes idiosyncratic, evocative, home-recorded indie rock. Earlier this year, urika’s bedroom toured with Nourished By Time, and we posted their single “XTC.” That song will appear on urika’s bedroom’s full-length debut album Big Smile, Black Mire, which is set to arrive later this year. So will “Circle Games,” the new urika’s bedroom single.

Among many, many other releases to his name over the past decade-plus, the Asheville-based Bhutanese guitarist Tashi Dorji teamed up with Drag City for an illuminating album called Stateless back in 2020. He’ll release another one on the iconic Chicago label this fall under the title we will be wherever the fires are lit. Dorji’s experimental, improv-based approach to acoustic guitar — billed on his Bandcamp bio as “a post-colonial disembowlment of guitar traditions” — has landed him work alongside fellow greats like Bill Orcutt and C. Spencer Yeh. On “begin from here,” the first track from the new LP, you can hear that discipline yielding inspired results in real time. It’s a percussive, hypnotic experience worth getting lost in.

Next month, Trauma Ray will unleash their debut full-length, Chameleon. The Fort Worth shoegaze crew released “Bishop,” and today they’re back with the aptly titled “Spectre.”

Owen Ashworth has announced Horrible Occurrences, Advance Base’s first new album of original material in over six years. Following 2018’s Animal Companionship and his 2021 covers album Wall Of Tears & Other Songs I Didn’t Write, the new one is out in December. Today, we get the lead single and the album’s opener “The Year I Lived In Richmond.”

Back in the early part of 2023, New Jersey’s self-described “noisegaze” band High. (yes, the period is part of the name) released their debut EP on the great Philly label Julia’s War. Today they’ve announced another EP, Come Back Down, set for release in January on the esteemed underground mainstay Kanine Records. Opening track “In A Hole,” out today, churns and gleams with the best of ’em, nailing the balance of atmospherics and dynamism that can make music like this so intoxicating when done well. Friends/Pagan Rituals/Kissing Is A Crime member Matthew Molnar, who has been lurking in these pages as an artist and producer for a long time, is behind the boards on this one, doing some of his best work her.

The great British folk musician Laura Marling released her last album 2020’s Song For Our Daughter, before she had a daughter. Now, she has a daughter, and she’s getting ready to release Patterns In Repeat, her first album since becoming a parent. We’ve posted Marling’s songs “Patterns” and “No One’s Gonna Love You Like I Can,” and now she’s also shared the new LP’s opening track.

Dublin-based indie rockers Silverbacks were a Stereogum Band To Watch in 2020. Next month, they’ll release Easy Being A Winner, the new album that they recorded with Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox. After dropping the singles “Selling Shovels” and “Something I Know,” and now they’ve shared “Giving Away An Inch Of,” a new song with a sweet melody and a chugging backbeat. In a few short weeks, Oklahoma City noise-rock greats will follow their modern-classic 2022 full-length debut God’s Country with the much-anticipated new album Cool World. (Chat Pile have put out a lot of music, but unless we’re counting the Tenkiller soundtrack and the various EPs, this is only their second proper album.) Thus far, Chat Pile have shared the early tracks “I Am Dog Now” and “Masc,” and both of them are awesome. Today, we get to hear a third song.

Lync were an excellent emo/post-hardcore band who came out of Olympia’s indie rock scene in the early ’90s. Despite only being active for two years, they cranked out one cult classic album in 1994 called These Are Not Fall Colors, which was reissued last year. Tragically, frontman Sam Jayne died in 2020, but the album stands as an enduring underground gem in his wake. Pedro The Lion’s David Bazan is also a fan.

Earlier this year, Real Estate threw an album release show for their new album Daniel where you could only get into the show if your name was Daniel, or a variation like Dan, Danny, or Danielle. They ended the show with a cover of Elton John’s 1973 hit “Daniel,” which got a cosign from the Rocketman himself. Then, they performed the cover live on KEXP. Today, at last, Real Estate have shared a studio version of their “Daniel” cover. Listen to it below.

The Brazilian-British singer-songwriter Naima Bock’s 2022 debut album Giant Palm was one of our favorites of that year, and Bock herself made it onto our list of the best new artists. Later this week, Bock will follow that LP with her sophomore effort Below A Massive Dark Land. We’ve already posted her songs “Lines,” “Kaley,” “Further Away,” “Gentle,” and “Feed My Release.” Now, Bock has shared a sixth advance track, which means that more than half of the LP is out in the world now.

Somehow, we are still in the same year when the self-professed Dublin “garage noise” band Sprints released their phenomenal debut album Letter To Self. (It came out on the very first New Music Friday of 2024, which now feels like a very long time ago.) They’ve had a months of ups and downs since then, including lots of great performances but also some sordid audience behavior and the departure of founding guitarist Colm O’Reilly. They’ve also kept releasing new music in the wake of their debut LP.

Coldwave is a genre of music — an icy post-electroclash goth thing with blank voices and drum machines and evil synths. But Coldwave is also the name of an Australian band that emphatically does not make coldwave. This particular Coldwave is a six-piece group that started in Adelaide four years ago, and they make a big, dramatic form of indie rock. They’ve been getting love from the Australian radio network Triple J, and now they’ve got an impressive new two-song single.

Last month, Neva Dinova announced Canary, their first album in 16 years. It arrives this Friday, and the Omaha indie rock crew has unveiled “Edge Of Something,” “Lonely Heart,” and “Outside” so far. Today, they’re offering one last taste with “Near Me.”

Last month, Bryce Cloghesy of Crack Cloud and N0V3L announced the sophomore Military Genius album Scarred For Life. The Joshua Tree-based musician released the lead single “Deep Web,” and now he’s back with its follow-up, “Window To The Soul.”

Dark-tinted emo heroes Balance And Composure are nearing the release of their reunion album with you in spirit. They’ve shared quite a few singles ahead of time, and today they share one last advance song. Title track “with you in spirit” wastes no time sweeping you into its foreboding headspace. “Please recognize that I’m terrified/ I’m mortified/ I’m up all night,” goes the pre-chorus, before a huge refrain about bearing a crushingly heavy burden. Back in July, British rockers Sports Team announced their new album Boys These Days. After announcing the follow-up to 2022’s Gulp! with the lead single “I’m In Love (Subaru),” they’re back today with another one called “Condensation.”

We named Alex Montenegro’s indie rock project Skirts a Band To Watch back in 2021, and her debut record Great Big Wild Oak earned her another accolade as one of the Best New Bands of that year. Today, Montenegro is back with her first new music since then, the single “Run.”
